TIME LINE HISTORY
1655
Hacienda Mixed
Hacienda Temozón was first registered in 1655 and the principal activity was cattle. The owner was Don Diego de Mendoza, whose ancestors were of the Montejo family, who conquered Yucatan
1750
Hacienda Mixed
In the second half of the 18th century the majority of the properties were converted into mixed Haciendas, incorporating the corn crop with cattle.
1800
Henequen
In the second half of the XIX century Temozón was quickly transformed into cultivating henequen (sisal) for fiber, due to the henequen “boom.”
1890
Henequen
In 1890, Temozón became the largest producer of this fiber under the new owner Carlos Peon Machado, and up to 1900 employed 640 workers.
From the end 18th century
Henequen
The opening of commerce allowed the cultivation of crops for the export and each region specialized in producing what was richest to the local soil. Thus, huge areas were turned over to the exploitation of hard woods, salt, sugar cane, cotton or tobacco. From 1830 there were attempts at large scale sisal production, but the lack of fiber-shredding machinery limited the supply to hand-produced fiber.
Last quarter of 19th century
Henequen
It was only in the last quarter of the 19th century that sisal could be shredded mechanically, and cultivation spread. The old estates or rural farms were transformed to the almost exclusive production of fiber. Great halls were built for the shredding machinery, steam engines with their typical chimneys, and presses for making bales, trains for transporting the leaves, networks of Decauville rails that covered the whole hacienda, dryers, and warehouses. Plants were built for the overseas administrators, supervisors and workers, as well as service buildings such as schools, infirmaries, chapels, stores and others, which now form occasionally quite large villages around the haciendas.
1910
Henequen
The government that came into power after the 1910 Revolution carried out agrarian reforms and the redistribution of land, at the same time as the market for “Green Gold” was declining. Many haciendas were abandoned and their ruins disappeared into the tropical jungle. Today, some have been restored for a different purpose from the original ones, thus preserving the beauty of what was until not so long ago, the Pride of Yucatan.
1919
Henequen
From 1919 the Haciendas had an economic boom due to the First World War with the production and sales of the fiber.
1921
Restablishment to the village of Abala
In 1921 the government decreed the reestablishment to the village of Abalá, the land originally belonging to the villagers so they could have their own piece of land to sow corn. The project was to establish collective homesteads equivalent to the communal land of the colonial era.
1924
Restablishment to the village of Abala
The restitution of this land signified the reduction of fifty percent of the Temozón Hacienda n the year 1924 it reduced to only 3,291 hectares from the total of 6,642 hectares originally registered.
1937
Restablishment to the village of Abala
Consequently in 1937 with the new Land Reform Law and conflicts between the workers, the President of Mexico declared the illegality of haciendas.
1956
Restablishment to the village of Abala
In 1956 the government returned the land back to its last owner Humberto Peon Suarez.
1973
Property was sold
In 1973 one hundred years after being in the Peon family the property was sold to Adolfo Escobedo Batun who bequeathed it to Miguel Angel de Cervera.
1997
Restoration
Nearly a century later, in 1997, the restoration process of the hacienda began with the aim of transforming it into the Hacienda Uayamon hotel. This work, which took approximately four years, was led by a specialized team of architects and restoration engineers who adapted the hacienda’s original spaces to the new functions required for contemporary hotel operations. The project has 37 hectares. Nature is present around the Hacienda, by means of Cenotes (underground rivers), caves, flora and fauna pertaining to the region.
